Abstract
Iridium je globalni satelitski sustav financiran od strane Iridium Communications Inc., a proizveden od strane Thales Alenia Space. Projekt vrijedan 3 bilijuna američkih dolara dobio je ime po prijašnjoj generaciji satelita koja je trebala sadržati 77 satelita, kao što je i atomski broj elementa iridij. Sa svojom mrežom od 66 aktivnih satelita u niskoj orbiti Zemlje pruža usluge komuniciranja satelitskih telefona i integriranih primopredajnika. Priznat kao pružatelj Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) usluga od strane International Maritime Organization (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), te ne dugo nakon toga počeo biti reguliran od strane International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), Iridium sustav će brzo postati konkurencija dosadašnjem monopolu te doprinijeti raznolikosti dobavljača i time smanjiti cijene brodske opreme.
Abstract (english)
Iridium is a global satellite system funded by Iridium Communications Inc., developed through Thales Alenia Space. A project worth 3 billion US dolars has been named after the previous generation of satellites which was supposed to contain 77 satellites, as is the atomic number of element iridium. With its 66 active satellites in the lower earth orbit (LEO) it provides services of communication through satelitte phones and integrated transceivers. Recognized as a provider of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and not long after started to be regulated by International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), Iridium system will soon become a competition in so far monopol, and contribute to supplier diversity and with that lower the costs of shipboard equipment.
