Abstract
Sustavi s valnim multipleksiranjem (WDM – Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) zasnovani su na sposobnosti optičkog vlakna da prenosi mnoge različite valne duljine svjetlosti (boja u osnovi) istodobno i bez međusobnih valnih preklapanja. Svaka valna duljina predstavlja optički kanal unutar vlakna. Postoji nekoliko metoda za razvrstavanje pojedinih kanala unutar vlakna i za njihovo izdvajanje na željenim točkama duž mreže. WDM sustavi su danas evoluirali do točke gdje su razmaci između pojedinih valnih duljina ili kanala jako mali, odnosno djelić nanometra (10-9 m). Time su se uzdignuli sustavi s valnim multipleksiranjem velike gustoće (DWDM – Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing). Danas se koriste mreže gdje pojedino optičko vlakno nosi više od 100 nezavisnih optičkih kanala. Za uspjeh DWDM sustava većinom je zaslužan razvoj erbijem-dopirano optičko pojačalo (EDFA – Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier), tj. optički uređaj koji koristi energiju laserske pumpe pomoću koje pojačava sve valne duljine pristigle na njegov ulaz. S tim direktnim pojačavanjem optičkih signala, tj. bez potrebe konvertiranja optičkih signala u električne i obratno, omogućena je konstrukcija prijenosnih mreža na velike udaljenosti s malo ili čak i bez ikakvih dodatnih elektroničkih komponenata. Multipleksiranje s vremenskom podjelom (TDM – Time Division Multiplexing) dodaje kanale na način da dijeli već postojeće kanale, time komplicira protokole i poskupljuje opremu. Kanali moraju biti pažljivo zaštićeni i identificirani, kako bi se omogućio oporavak pojedinog optičkog kanala. Za razliku od TDM sustava, WDM sustavi jednostavno odašilju više signala duž vlakna, bez vremenskih i protokolnih implikacija.

Wavelength division multiplexing systems are based on optical fiber ability to transfer many different wavelengths of light (colors in essence) simultaneously and without overlaping between themselves. Every wavelength represents optical channel within fiber. There are several methods for dividing each channel within fiber and for separating them on various points along the network. Today, WDM system evolved to a level where the spacing between two wavelengths or channels are very small, actually a fraction of nanometer (10-9 m). That spacing allowed rising of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) systems. Today, networks use individual optical fiber that can carry more than 100 independent optical channels. To a success of DWDM systems are mainly responsible development of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), i.e. optical devices which use laser pump energy to amplify every wavelength arrived at the port. That kind of direct amplifying of optical signal, i.e. without need to convert optical signal to electrical and vice versa, provided construction of long haul transfer networks with little or even without any additional electronic components. Time division multiplexing (TDM) adds channels by dividing existing channels, thus complicating protocols and increasing the price of equipment needed. Channels must be carefully protected and identified, in order to be able to recover each individual optical channel. Unlike TDM systems, WDM system simply propagate more signals along fiber, without time and protocol implications. Keywords: parameter
