Water is one of the most important life factors and it is essential for every living being. However, drinking water can not be found everywhere in sufficient quantities, so it's necessary to create it, and one of the potential ways to do that is desalination of the sea. The subject of this paper is analysis of the desalination methods and their mode of operation and efficiency. It is well known that the concentrate that is produced as a byproduct of desalination negatively affects the environment. Its influence, as well as the overall impact of desalination on the environment, is addressed in the ecological aspect of desalination. Apart from the ecological, the economic aspect of desalination and the overall cost-effectiveness of such water production was also addressed. In the future, due to increased population and pollution, a shortage of naturally available drinking water is expected to made desalination even more important. That is why, in this work, through the SWOT analysis, the advantages and disadvantages of desalination methods are presented, showing their effectiveness and environmental impacts.
